Our Story

In a world consumed by screens, Enklu offers an answer to a simple yet profound question: What if technology could bring us closer together instead of isolating us?

It was 2016, and Ray Kallmeyer was in San Mateo, California, working for an international mobile game publisher. Then came an email that changed everything: he’d been selected to receive one of the very first developer kits for the world’s first augmented reality headset.

"I’d tried VR headsets before, but when I put on the HoloLens, it was like a bolt of lightning,” Ray recalls. “AR was different. Suddenly, 3D animations were in my living room, and I was making eye contact with real people at the same time. It made the keyboard and mouse feel ancient, and screens, well, flat. This wasn’t just the future of gaming—it was the future of computing. I quit my job the next day. People thought I’d lost it.”

But Ray wasn’t just chasing a new gadget; he saw the potential for something transformative. With smartphones already dominating our attention and AI on the rise, he envisioned a way to blend the digital with the physical, not replace it. So, he founded Enklu in his apartment—a small but determined startup committed to reshaping how we interact with the world around us.

“Ironically, accessibility was the blind spot for many in those early days,” Ray notes. “Engineers often get lost in the tech itself, forgetting the people using it. At Enklu, People First isn’t just a slogan. We spent months fine-tuning the basics—making a button feel intuitive, ensuring the experience was seamless, and ditching the need for a manual. If it takes 10 minutes to get content from a laptop to a headset, we’ve already failed.

”As Enklu's prototypes evolved into pilot deals with major corporations, a winning formula for augmented reality began to emerge: blend game development, interior design, space management, and captivating content. The goal? Inspire a new wave of players, creators, and businesses to dive into AR.

By 2018, Enklu’s vision came to life in The Unreal Garden, a modest pop-up nestled in downtown San Francisco. It wasn’t just an exhibit; it was a glimpse into a new kind of media. Over ten thousand visitors flocked to experience mind-bending visuals that blurred the lines between gaming and art galleries. Critics had their gripes—software bugs, long lines—but the thrill from fans, and repeat visits from Apple and Google executives, proved Enklu was onto something big.

This momentum attracted talent, secured funding, and sparked collaborations with industry giants like Microsoft. Enklu was ready to hand the reins to creators worldwide, empowering them to build their own immersive experiences.

“We launched The Unreal Garden at E3 in 2019, right next to Nintendo,” Ray says with a grin. “There we were, side by side with Mario, showcasing what we’d built in front of the entire gaming universe. It felt surreal.”

But then came 2020, a year that nearly broke Enklu. The global COVID-19 pandemic halted the very concept of shared real-world experiences. Major deals vanished, partnerships dissolved, and supply chain chaos threatened the company’s growth. It was Enklu’s darkest hour, where resilience was the only path forward.

By 2021, with restrictions easing, Enklu reimagined The Unreal Garden. This time, they merged hard-earned lessons into a more dynamic model. Success now required a balance of cutting-edge tech, strategic marketing, and seamless operations. Slowly but surely, the magic returned. But something was still missing—a catalyst for real impact.

That spark arrived in 2022 with the launch of Verse Immersive. This wasn’t just an event; it was a full-fledged holographic theatre concept that activated both businesses and consumers, redefining immersive AR. What began in San Francisco quickly spread to cities like Denver, Chicago, and Orlando. It offered a spectrum of experiences, going beyond traditional entertainment formats.

Today, Enklu supports thousands of monthly active Spatial players, creators, and businesses across four countries and 15 markets, delivering thousands of hours of experiences every week. With five successful media franchises—Star Walk, Art of the Future, Sightcraft, Primal Ranch, and more—Enklu is realizing its vision: a world where the spatial web brings people together, enriching real-world connections. Every hour in Enklu is an hour spent away from screens, immersed in shared reality.
